Job Creation

Growing Long Island’s economy:
It is imperative that we continue to create good jobs
here on Long Island. One
of the ways we’ve been working to ensure our children’s future
here is through the Gen*NY*sis program. The Gen*NY*sis program was created to encourage growth in
biotechnology and life sciences research.
Bringing biotechnology to New York:
This
year, Gen*NY*sis is a $530 million plan including $25 million in
tax incentives for 8 Gen*NY*sis zones. On Long Island, research institutions include SUNY
Farmingdale, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, and SUNY Stony
Brook.
Positioning Long Island for the future:
In September, Governor Pataki joined with Nassau’s Senate
delegation to announce a comprehensive public-private partnership
that will capitalize on the region’s assets and establish Long
Island as the undisputed capital of the emerging biotech economy.
An extension of the Gen*NY*sis program, the funding will provide
$48 million in State support for a $71.5 million initiative to
bolster Long Island’s burgeoning biotechnology economy. The
partnership includes the internationally renowned Cold Spring
Harbor Laboratory, OSI Pharmaceuticals, North Shore-Long Island
Jewish Institute and academic partners at Hofstra University, SUNY
Farmingdale and Molloy College. The projects, funded through the
Senate's "Gen*NY*sis" plan and other State economic
development programs, will augment existing research capacity,
enhance educational opportunities and expand available
commercial/laboratory facilities, building upon the region’s
tremendous biotechnology strengths and bolstering the region's
position at the forefront of biotech research and economic
development.
